Alberta Referendum 2026
October 19

On October 19, 2026, the province of Alberta will hold a referendum concerning whether the province should seek to separate itself from the rest of Canada and try making a go of it as an independent nation. Importantly, this initial referendum does not seek conclusive authority from voters for separation. Rather, it poses the preliminary question of whether Alberta should invest time and money in defining and proceeding toward a future, binding referendum on its future relationship with Canada. Many Catholics and people of good will are asking how to evaluate what is at stake, and how to form their conscience responsibly.
